Tanaka struggles in Yankees loss to Red Sox

Boston (AFP) – Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka struggled in his second start back from a two-month injury layoff on Saturday, departing in the second inning of the New York Yankees‘ 10-4 loss at Boston.

Tanaka had looked solid last Sunday in his first test since he was diagnosed with a partially torn ligament in his right elbow.

But on Saturday he gave up seven hits and seven runs — five earned — before he was lifted after one and two-thirds innings, sparking fears he may after all require surgery on the elbow which would likely sideline him all of next season.

Daniel Nava collected three hits and drove in three runs for the Red Sox in the second game of a season-ending three-game set.

Yoenis Cespedes added two hits and two runs-batted-in, while Rusney Castillo picked up three hits, drove in a run and scored once for Boston.

Garin Cecchini doubled twice, scored a run and drove in one for the hosts, who cruised to victory thanks to an eight-run second.

Red Sox pitcher Joe Kelly allowed four runs on nine hits over seven and one-third innings, but with the strong offense backing him it was enough for the win.

The contest gave Red Sox fans a glimpse of the player they’ve loved to hate for two decades: retiring Yankees captain Derek Jeter.

An exhausted Jeter sat out the opening game of the series on Friday — a day after he finished his last game at Yankee Stadium with a flourish — driving in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

“He did a lot of thinking,” manager Joe Girardi said. “I’m not sure what I would’ve done if I was him. I’m not so sure I wouldn’t have let that be my last moment, and I think he’s a guy that feels a real responsibility to the game and that’s part of his reason for playing today. He respects the fans and what they’ve done.”

Fans of the Red Sox — the Yankees’ bitter fivals in the American League East — greeted Jeter with cheers as he warmed up with sprints in the outfield before the game.

He received another ovation in his first at-bat as the Yankees’ designated hitter.

He finished the day 1-for-2 at the plate with an infield single — the 3,464th hit of his career — before exiting in the fifth inning.
