Jason Chambers says Boku is in for a very tough test against Folayang

Co-Main Event: Eduard Folayang vs Kotetsu Boku

Team Lakay fighter Eduard Folayang is about to take his sixth trip into the ONE FC cage, and he’s set to face his toughest test to date, former lightweight world champ Kotetsu Boku.

“Landslide” Folayang (13-4) is a SEA Games gold medalist in Wushu and he boasts superb striking and conditioning, which have made him one of the best MMA fighters to come out of the Philippines. He’s encountered some speed bumps in his ONE FC career (he’s 3-2 with the promotion) but he’ll be looking to make it two-straight wins when he takes on “No Face” Boku (21-9-2).

Folayang’s opponent will be a Japanese fighter who has never been knocked out in over 30 professional bouts. He’s a dangerous striker who has an underrated submission game, and he’ll surely be the toughest test of Folayang’s career. However, longtime ONE FC commentator and analyst Jason Chambers believes that this match-up is in Folayang’s favor.

Eduard Folayang“I think that Eduard Folayang is a very, very big lightweight,” said Chambers.

“He cuts a lot weight and he’s built like a tank. And Kotetsu Boku, is a very small lightweight, so I think that matchup actually favors Eduard a tremendous amount. Boku has heavy hands, he has great footwork, and he’s very tenacious, but he’s really small at lightweight. If you look at his fight when he fought “The Cheetah” [Vuyisile Colossa], it was a similar fight [as Folayang vs. Boku], and he kind of got outmuscled and bullied a bit on the ground, even though it was a great, entertaining fight. I think that Eduard is going to fight him a lot the same way. Eduard’s got to watch out because Boku, even though he’s a small guy, he hits tremendously hard. We’ve seen him put down a few of his opponents and he always comes to finish fights, and he’s very difficult to stop, so that’s going to be a great fight.”

True enough, Folayang’s physical prowess is one of his greatest weapons. In fact, his past three losses have come at the hands of opponents who could match him physically, such as Ole Laursen, Lowen Tynanes, and Kamal Shalorus. Boku is a very dangerous opponent, but Folayang definitely has the tools to beat him.

Chambers added that it comes as no surprise to him that Filipinos fighters such as Folayang are making their mark in the international MMA scene. He credits the success of such fighters to the Filipino’s long-standing history rooted in fighting.

“I feel that some of the most tenacious guys that ONE FC has fighting for them are the Filipino fighters, said Chambers, who was also the host of History Channel’s Human Weapon. “And I think that goes back to just the history and culture of the Philippines, even how Eskrima and Kali were integrated into the systems and how people have been doing that for years. And guys like Manny Pacquiao who have really just riveted the Filipino nation with a sense of pride and unity and really became the first legitimate sports superstar to come out of the Philippines.”

When asked on what it would take to get Philippine MMA to that next level, Chambers said that, given the amount of fighting talent the country offers, it’s only a matter of time before the sport reaches new heights on Philippine soil.

“I think it’s going to be a few years, but I’d be shocked if the Philippines and Singapore weren’t a powerhouse in MMA in five years. You guys have some of the best, most talented, aggressive, and hungry fighters out there.”
