Japanese teacher held over Saturday classes bomb threat

Police searched Mr Yabusaki’s home but say they found no explosives and
authorities say it is unlikely that he intended to carry out his threats.

The board of education was sufficiently concerned about the incident to issue
a statement in which it stated, “We are very sorry he was in a position
to teach children.”

Saturday classes were phased out of Japanese
schools in the 1990s but are being re-introduced as part of the national
government’s drive to improve education standards.

In a survey last year when the issue of Saturday classes was being debated, 86
per cent of parents were in favour but 52 per cent of teachers were opposed.
