Japanese cooking class fundraiser postponed, exchange students still headed to Forest Grove

Hold your hangiri and sheath your santoku. The Japanese cooking class that was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 4 has been postponed to a currently undecided date in mid-January due to low enrollment.

Forest Grove City Recorder, Anna Ruggles, who is organizing the class, said because only 14 of the necessary 25 people signed up, the class will be moved to allow time for more registrants.

The class acts as a fundraiser for student activities related to Forest Grove’s sister cities program with Nyuzen, Japan. A ten-student delegation From Nyuzen will arrive in Forest Grove on Oct. 30. The money raised from the cooking class would have gone toward activities for these visiting students, such as this year’s scheduled trip to a pumpkin patch.

Because the City of Forest Grove donates $300 for these programs annually, Ruggles said costs for the delegation will still be covered and all plans will continue. When the cooking class does happen, money it raises from the $25-$30 ticket sales will go back into an ongoing account dedicated to these student programs.

According to Ruggles, all of the 14 people who previously registered for the class have opted to stay enrolled pending the designation of a new date. Until then, she is taking phone numbers and email addresses from interested parties who want to be notified when a new date is set. Contact Ruggles at 503-992-3235 or aruggles@forestgrove-or.gov to get on her list.
