Japanese companies seek Saudi graduates

Around 30 Japanese companies have started head hunting Saudi graduate students to fill positions at their branches in the Kingdom.

Representatives of these firms recently attended a jobs fair in Tokyo organized by the Saudi Cultural Attaché in Japan. The event also marked the graduation of 120 Saudi students who had studied in Japan under the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Scholarship Program.

The firms included Hitachi, Toyota, Isuzu, Panasonic, JJC and many others. The event was widely covered in local Japanese newspapers. Isam Amanallah Bukhari, the Saudi cultural attaché, said King Salman believed in investing in human resource development.

Speaking at a media briefing with Japanese journalists, Bukhari said the government wants to ensure that it builds a knowledge economy based on innovation.

He said the interest shown by Japanese companies was proof that Saudi Arabia was on the right track in developing the skills of its young people. He thanked Minister of Education Azzam Al-Dakheel and his deputy for higher education, Ahmad Al-Seif, for their support.

A local Japanese newspaper published a report stating that Japanese firms had succeeded in attracting 50 percent of Saudi students who graduated from Japanese universities over the past few years. The report stated that Japanese companies are committed to doing business in Saudi Arabia despite the recent upsurge in terror-related activities.

An official at Tokyo Kaiju Holding Company said the aim is to attract Saudis because they are familiar with the market in the Kingdom and would provide advice on what products to sell.

Tomoko Yushi Kawa, director of employee affairs at Torishima Company, which participated in the careers day for the first time, said Saudi scholarship students were serious about taking up jobs with Japanese firms.

The chairman of the JJC board said his company has attracted several Saudi engineers who graduated from institutions in Japan.
