An Indian graduate school student in New Delhi studying the Japanese language has published a self-help book aimed at her compatriots who may be visiting Japan for the first time.

The book, “Meri Japan Yatra,” or “My Japan Trip,” was recently launched at the Japan Foundation in New Delhi.

Archna Sharma, 24, spent a year in Japan studying the language. She wrote of her experiences in Japan both in Hindi and in Japanese.

Born and raised in New Delhi, Sharma said she has been interested in Japanese culture, particularly anime, since childhood.

She got a chance to visit Japan with a scholarship from the Japanese government and studied Japanese language and culture for a year at Kyushu University in Fukuoka.

“These days, a good number of Indian students go to Japan, and I hope my book will not only help those students but also help professionals and tourists visiting Japan for the first time,” Sharma said.

Her main message to Indians visiting Japan: “Try to adjust and understand Japanese culture positively.”

“There are many good things to learn from the Japanese people. During my trip to Japan I was so impressed by cleanliness wherever I traveled,” she said.

Sharma, who is now studying Japanese in the postgraduate program at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, said she wants to become a Japanese-language teacher and translate and write books both in Hindi and in Japanese.

“I would like to exchange cultural ties by translating Japanese literature in Hindi. I will also go to Japan and try to publish things in Japanese,” she said, adding that her dream is to pursue a doctorate in Japanese-language studies in Japan.

“I definitely recommend all my Indian friends and colleagues to visit Japan and learn the Japanese language as relations between two countries are increasing,” she said.
